suburbicon analysis

This is the story of a kid learning his parents aren’t perfect and all of his neighbors are violent racists. Character in a coma. But, going back to the “substantial” argument. As a black comedy, a social satire, an analysis of race relations, take your pick – the film is a bust. What's the impact of media violence on kids? I’m not sure why Clooney is hated (i for one like him very much).

Clues quickly indicate that Gardner and Margaret have hired the thugs themselves to knock off Rose, and when an insurance claims inspector (Oscar Isaac) arrives, things escalate. To top it all off, Suburbicon is just plain boring. People like Josh Brolin and Woody Harrelson were even announced to be joining the cast as recently as 2015. Film Critic for “Suburbicon” doesn’t so much tell two stories that never coalesce into one—it doesn’t tell any interesting story at all. It is the late-1950s. Wondering if Suburbicon is OK for your kids? Unfortunately, the end product is not funny at all, with Clooney’s handling of the brothers’ envelope-pushing gags and violence materializing as repulsive. Rose’s identical twin sister Maggie (also Julianne Moore) also lives nearby. Country: United States Quirky, violent Coen comedy isn't meant for kids.

Taglines Filled with bizarre choices from a writing and directing perspective, Suburbicon is an unlikable, boring slog. I believe it is being misread by the masses and the twin-plot muddle actually makes the audience complicit in seeing the bigger issue of systemic racism as a background story while the domestic white crime gets all the attention. Thanks for reading! Now, this isn’t quite enough to be a breaking point, but a noticeably odd tone and Gardner’s obviously mellow demeanor add up to a faulty opening act. As are several of the weapons used: Many characters die, and there's stabbing, fighting, bashing with blunt objects, choking, a car crash, an explosion, and poisoning. However--as the young patriarch, Gardner Lodge, and his family start catching a few disturbing glimpses of the once-welcoming neighbourhood's dark underbelly--seemingly random acts of unprecedented violence paired with a gruesome death will blemish, irreparably, Suburbicon's picture-perfect facade. Plot Keywords Their story is simple enough as it is linear. Set in a Nuketown-like setting before the nuke dropped, Suburbicon attempts to be a biting, dark comedy with a sadistic edge. As for the murder storyline, it's distasteful, focusing on sociopathic characters with no moral center. Other than when the movie appears to levitate for a brief period while Oscar Isaac is on-screen, the dull “Suburbicon” lacks in witty dialogue, interesting characters, or even visual flourishes. There might have been some thoughtful intentions behind this idea, but it clearly did not come to fruition. There are many fundamental flaws in Suburbicon that we will get to in due time, but one of the few things that this movie gets right is replicating a 1950’s feel.

A child stumbles upon a sexual situation: A man is paddling a woman's behind, and both have their pants down (no sensitive body parts are shown). He might later throw his hands up and claim the concept was “unfilmable,” but misguided choices plague the picture enough to confirm there is more to blame here than difficult material.

The idea of exposing the seedy underlayer of the white middle class has potential, but Clooney squanders it by flagrantly declaring his motives early on, and proceeding to beat a dead horse for two hours. ( Log Out /  © Common Sense Media. Even people who don’t pay attention to the film industry know the name George Clooney. The star rating reflects overall quality. Suburbicon is a story about a middle-class dad (Matt Damon) who attempts to cope with the home invasion murder of his wheelchair-bound wife (Julianne Moore). Two stories compete for screen time but never really intertwine in the script by George Clooney and Grant Heslov, who developed a script also still-credited to Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, so we’ll tackle them separately.

Mrs. Lodge dies but is quickly replaced in the family unit by her twin sister Margaret (also Julianne Moore, of course). Suburbicon is a serious, serious misfire. Obviously, it took some more time for the film to get off the ground. Character strangled. It is as flat as the well-manicured lawns in the idyllic neighborhood that gives it a name. However, in the summer of 1959, Lodge’s wife (Moore) is killed by a couple of mobsters, leading his son Nicki (Jupe) to have serious thoughts about leaving the family for a safer life. I definitely feel it, but how do I (we) know how accurate our “feels” are, being that our only exposure to the 50s has been from television and the movies? I’m glad you enjoyed it but I still can’t agree with you lol (this happens way too often).

Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) lives and works in the picturesque mid-American community of Suburbicon. This review was originally published from the Toronto Film Festival on September 13th, 2017. A current young professional in the greater Washington, D.C. area, Nick founded MovieBabble in October of 2016 when he was a bored college student with nothing else to do. Based on the true story of what happened to William (Leith M. Burke) and Daisy Meyers (Karimah Westbrook) in Levittown in August 1957, this half of the movie feels like underdeveloped manipulation. As always, however, I appreciate your thoughts! Graphic violence, strong language in clever crime comedy.

Of course, it all comes back to the flaws of a director unable to figure out what story he’s trying to convey or an intriguing way to tell it. Post was not sent - check your email addresses! For that select few of people, it’ll help to distract from some other really ugly pieces of Suburbicon. Without any humor or interesting characters to keep the film entertaining, that’s a tough premise for a movie. It’s fun to debate film without being called a moron ? The trailer pitched this movie as a wacky, dark comedy. The film tries to have it tie in with the main story that involves Matt Damon and Julianne Moore, but there isn’t nearly enough time devoted to it. Suburb within a Suburb Of course, Hollywood is by no means a stranger to films that question and/or shatter the traditional image of the American suburb and the kind of American Dream it stands for. A car is set on fire, a house vandalized. They’re lifeless. The tone is also off in the main plot, which desperately wants to be Fargo, but lacks focus and never quite comes to life.

The movie tells the story of an all-white neighborhood of Suburbicon in 1959. If they felt comfortable with the script, wouldn’t they choose to go ahead and direct it themselves? Gardner Lodge (Damon) and his family live in the peaceful town of Suburbicon, a quiet, wholesome place of residence. But he doesn’t quite pull it off, so it feels like you’re flipping the channel between two completely different movies. Filled with bizarre choices from a writing and directing perspective, Suburbicon is an unlikable, boring slog. Because of the slash and hack job, the start of the film feels really uneven, indeed we don’t even meet the father until the robbery. And one has to assume this is Clooney’s point—that murderous white people are getting away with it while communities are blinded by racist anger—even if that doesn’t seem like enough on which to really thematically hang a film.

The latest film from George Clooney as director is an uneasy mix of disparate elements, and while it may not ever fully snap into focus, it is clearly an ambitious attempt to marry dark comedy, film noir, and social commentary. In fact, the Coen brothers wrote a first draft of the script in 1986 soon after the release of Blood Simple. Storyline #1 is the Mayers’ story. I would argue that the two narrative threads are so disconnected that making the leap to say that that has something to do with its thematic elements is more of guess than fact.

However, when Nicky sees his father deliberately fail to identify the men in a police line-up, he begins to suspect all is not what it seems. Then the friendly African-American Mayers family moves in nearby, and Gardner's son Nicky (Noah Jupe) befriends their son, Andy (Tony Espinosa). For those that are, I’ll save you some trouble and let you know now that despite the towering star talent involved, Suburbicon is an awkward faceplant in addition to being one of the biggest bombs of the year. Sure, there’s always room for ambiguity in films, but something was missing here that just didn’t allow the film to be cohesive. | The acting and scenery are just fine, but when you strip those elements away and just focus on the story, you realize that this is actually a shell of a film. Language is strong, with uses of "f--k," "s--t," the "N" word," "a--hole," and more. Email This BlogThis!

The movie's two story threads tentatively, awkwardly meet up at the end, but with no payoff. Does it appear to be based on love and trust? It is a film that aims to bring a serious topic to light but fails in its attempt as it is brought to life through underdeveloped characters and a somewhat loose story too.

The following review will be spoiler free. Always a joy to read here. And yet, despite all its missteps, Suburbicon is one of the most unusual and fascinating failures of 2017.
